Week 3 Recap: A Wire-to-Wire Thriller, Two Comebacks, and Another Nail-Biting Tie

Three weeks in, and NORAD Hockey still hasn't given anybody a boring night. Week 3 delivered a taut five-goal comeback, a blowout that flipped on a three-goal second period, and a game decided with under three minutes to go. Here's the full breakdown.

J&J Automotive 5, World Orphans 5 (Tie)

If you like lead changes, this was the game of the week. World Orphans and J&J Automotive traded punches for all three periods and couldn't be separated. Jonathan Valtin opened the scoring for J&J Automotive, but World Orphans tied it before the first period even ended. The second period was where things really got going — World Orphans ripped off back-to-back goals to grab a 3-1 lead, only for J&J Automotive to answer with three straight of their own, capped by Valtin's second of the night, to flip the score to 4-3 in their favor.

World Orphans wasn't done. Andre Wright and Austin Webb scored twice in the third to push the lead back to 5-4, but J&J Automotive found the equalizer late through Eric Seibert — with Valtin picking up his third assist of the night — to lock the final at 5-5. Valtin finished as the game's top performer with 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points, while Chad Ferguson matched him nearly point for point with a goal and two assists for World Orphans. J&J Automotive took all three penalties in the game but still found a way to match their opponent goal for goal.

Triple J 5, Parker Winnelson 3

Parker Winnelson led for most of the second period, but Triple J had the better third. After trading goals early, Parker Winnelson grabbed the lead twice in the middle frame — first through Nicholas Lang, then Jared Wolf — sandwiched around a Triple J answer from Brie Varney. Parker Winnelson carried a 3-2 edge into the third.

That's when Keegan Mantaro took over. He scored twice in the third period, both assisted by Matt Lee, to erase the deficit and give Triple J the lead for good, and Kirk Moore added insurance late to close out the 5-3 win. Bob Colby chipped in two assists for Triple J, while Parker Winnelson got goals from three different scorers but couldn't find a fourth when it mattered.

Platinum 5, ACE 1

ACE actually struck first, with Simon Kurtz opening the scoring in the first period — but that was the only good news the visitors would get all night. Platinum answered with three unanswered goals in the second period, two of them from Andrew Marshall, to seize control heading into the third.

Marshall kept rolling in the third, adding two more goals to complete a four-goal night and put the game out of reach. ACE's only real look at a response came on a late power play after a Nora Wilson penalty, but Platinum's lead was built entirely at even strength and the man advantage never came into play. Andrew Marshall was the clear story of the night with four goals, while Austin Storm chipped in a goal and two assists of his own in the 5-1 win.

Nelson & Company 6, OS Offices 4

Nelson & Company jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period behind a four-goal outburst from TJ Liebl, who scored twice within 31 seconds of each other before adding a fourth in the frame. It looked like a laugher — until OS Offices answered with four unanswered goals of their own in the second period to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the third.

Nelson & Company regrouped and took the third period, with Anthony Mandt restoring the lead and TJ Liebl capping his historic night with an unassisted fourth goal to seal the 6-4 win. Liebl's four-goal performance was the headline of the night, but OS Offices' second-period comeback bid deserves plenty of credit for making this one interesting.

Velodrome 5, OUTCAN Outlaws 4

The night's closest finish came down to the final minutes. Velodrome and OUTCAN went back and forth all game, with the lead changing hands, before Hayden Smith settled it with the game-winning goal at 2:34 of the third period, assisted by Ty Smith. It was enough to hold off the Outlaws and send Velodrome home with a 5-4 win.

Week 3 had a bit of everything — a five-goal shootout that ended in a stalemate, two third-period comebacks, a four-goal individual performance, and a game decided in the final minutes. If there's a theme forming through three weeks of NORAD Hockey, it's that no lead is safe and no game is over until the final horn.
